Book of Remembrance entry
D.S.O., M.B., Ch.M., D.O.M.S., R.C.P. and S. (Eng.) : Lieutenant-Colonel, A.A.M.C., A.I.F., Egypt, Gallipoli and France. Enlisting 16th August, 1914, and sailing with 4th Australian Field Ambulance 22nd December, served in Egypt till 12th April, 1915, and then at Gallipoli and Lemnos until the Evacuation. Crossing to France with ambulance in June, 1916, was R.M.O. 45th Battn. from 10th December until 7th February, 1917, and then rejoining ambulance, was wounded at Passchendaele 29th September and evacuated to No. 3 London General Hospital. On recovery crossed again to France 4th March, 1918, and joined 15th A.F.Amb., but transferred to 6th on 29th March. Was wounded at Villers-Bretonneux 10th August but remained on duty, leaving for United Kingdom 8th October and returning to Australia in December. Awarded D.S.O. 4th June, 1917, and Mentioned in Despatches four times. Early education at Sydney Church of England Grammar School. Later at St. Paul's College with one year in Arts.
