Captain Vernon died of injuries at Samarai New Guinea on 16 May 1946. His name was venerated by troops in New Guinea for his courage in attending the wounded while under enemy fire. He had become an identity in Papua where he had been making a living for some years, partly as a medical officer, partly as a planter. He was 63 years of age when he died. Former RMO, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. He was awarded the MC in Nov 1916. From University of Sydney WWII Book of Remembrance.

M.C., M.B., Ch.M. : Major, A.A.M.C., A.I.F., Palestine and Egypt. Enlisting 4th March, 1915, and sailing 3rd June, with 4th A.L.H. Field Ambulance, was appointed R.M.O. and later S.M.O. Nekhl Column and served in Egypt, Sinai and Palestine until wounded at Tel-el-Sheria (Gaza) 7th November, 1917. On recovery was S.M.O. Training Depot, Moascar, and returned to Australia as S.M.O. troopship Port Darwin 19th August, 1918. Promoted major, 29th January, 1917. Awarded M.C.* at Romani in August, 1916, and Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at Sydney Church of England Grammar School. * He tended and dressed the wounded under heavy fire, displaying great courage and determination. Later, he remained out all night with a wounded man.
