M.C., M.P., Arts II : Major, 1st Battn., A.I.F., Gallipoli and France. Enlisting 7th August, 1914, and sailing 18th October as secondlieutenant, 1st Battn., took part in the Anzac Landing, being wounded next day and evacuated to hospital at Alexandria. Returning to Anzac, was appointed Acting Adjutant in July and Adjutant in November, remaining until the Evacuation. Crossing to France in March, served as Staff Captain, 14th Infantry Brigade H.Q., from 10th July, 1916, at Fromelles, Somme, Hindenburg Line, Bullecourt and as Brigade Major, 15th Bde. from 21st July, 1917, at Ypres III, the Somme and elsewhere. Rejoining battn. 15th April, 1918, was in charge of company at Villers-Bretonneux, wounded 18th September at Hindenburg Line and attached to Repatriation and Demobilisation Staff, London, from 13th December until demobilisation. Promoted lieutenant, 26th April, 1915; captain, 28th January, 1916; major, 6th October, 1917. Awarded M.C. 1st January, 1918, and Mentioned in Despatches. A.M.F. : Colonel, O.C., 3rd Cavalry Brigade, 1935- Minister for Defence. Early education at Sydney Preparatory and Grammar Schools.
