Senior athletic champion (1907) of his high school, Southee had won the Australian long-jump championship (1911), gained Blues for Rugby Union football and athletics at the universities of Sydney and Oxford, and become 100-metres champion of the allied forces in Italy (1919). From ADB entry

O.B.E., B.Sc., B.Sc.Agr.; M.A. (Oxon.), F .L .S .: Major, 23rd Divisional Train, B.E.F., France and Italy. Enlisting in Oxford in September, 1914, was commissioned to 7th Oxford and Bucks. Light Infantry but transferred to R.A.S.C. in October. Crossing in May, 1915, served in France till 1917 and in Italy till early 1919. Returning to England, was demobilised in November and spent a year in U.S.A., arriving in Australia in February, 1921. Promoted captain, 1st February, 1916, and later acting major. Awarded O.B.E. in 1919 and Mentioned in Despatches twice. Rhodes Scholar, 1913. Principal, Hawkesbury Agricultural College. Early education at Cootamundra Public and Sydney High Schools.
