Eng. I ll : Sapper, 6th Field Coy., Engineers, A.I.F., France. Volunteering in May, 1915, was accepted in December and sailing 1st April, 1916, as acting sergeant in charge of reinforcements 3rd Field Coy., crossed to France in September. Joining 6th Coy. on the Somme in October, did railway and survey work until death. Killed in Action, Somme, 1st December, 1916, and buried at Bernafay near Montauban. Early education at Albury Public and Sydney Grammar Schools. The MURRAY RAINSFORD SMITH Prize was founded in his memory by his mother in 1917. Had done excellent work, a fine fellow, whom I had already marked down for early promotion . . . at his own request spent a much longer period on forward work than anyone else . . . ''
