O.B.E., Arts and Eng. : Lieutenant-Colonel, A.F.C., A.I.F.. France and England. After being Director of Military Operations for Australia, Melbourne, from 10th August, 1914, to 31st December, 1915, enlisted as O.C. No. 1 Squadron A.F.C. 1st January, 1916, sailed 16th March and remained with it till 14th April, leaving squadron at Suez and becoming attached to War Office, London (R.F.C.) 1st May. Appointed A.A. and Q.M.G., 2nd Aust. Division in France, 22nd September and on 13th October, G.S.O. II, 1st Anzac Corps H.Q., transferring on 19th January, 1917, to 5th Division H.Q. and on 18th February to 3rd Division H.Q. Crossing to England, was S.O. for Aviation from 13th May, 1917, to 9th May, 1918, being on command at H.Q. London from 20th October and returning via U.S.A. and Canada 2nd August in charge of selected F.C. officers to reorganize Air Service. Promoted brevet lieutenant-colonel, 1st December, 1915. Awarded O.B.E. in 1918. A.M.F.: Appointed to R.A. Artillery from University, 1st April, 1901, and Director of Military Arts, Royal Military College, Duntroon, 17th October, 1918. Early education at Royston College, Rossendale School and St. Aloysius' College.
