Econ. : Lieutenant, 10th Bde., A.F.A., A.I.F., France. Enlisting 2nd May, 1916, and sailing 14th September with 11th Brigade reinforcements, joined 10th on 20th April, 1917, and fought as gunner at Bullecourt, Messines and Wytschaete, and bombardier at Passchendaele. Gaining commission 10th April, 1918, served at Villers-Bretonneux and Hamel, where wounded 6th July, 1918, returning to Australia 14th February, 1919. Promoted lieutenant, 10th July, 1918. Early education at Sydney Church of England Grammar and The Armidale Schools.
