C.M.G., D.S.O., V.D., B.A., LL.B., Diploma in Military Science : Lieutenant-Colonel, 19th and 20th, and 2nd M.G. Battns., A.I.F., Gallipoli, Egypt and France; also A.N. and M.E.F., New Guinea. Enlisting 11th August, 1914, and sailing on 18th, commanded coy. and was present at Kaba Kaul and Toma, and in charge of expedition to New Ireland to bring in refractory Germans and later to Kieta, Solomon Islands. On return was appointed to 19th Battn. as major and senior company commander 18th February, 1915, and, sailing in July, fought at Gallipoli till the Evacuation. Then was second in command on the Sinai Defences and in France, crossing in March, 1916. Promoted lieutenant-colonel to command 20th Battn. 6th June, taking part in operations at Armentieres, the Somme and Pozieres. Appointed to command 2nd Machine Gun Battn. in February, 1918, serving at Albert, Morlancourt, Villers-Bretonneux and elsewhere till demobilisation. Made a C.M.G. 1st January, 1918. Awarded D.S.O. 1st January, 1917, and Mentioned in Despatches four times. Member of S.U. Scouts. Second-lieutenant-major, Scottish Rifles; Second in Command, 39th Infantry A.M.F., 1910-14. Early education at Sydney Grammar School.
