M.C., Eng. I : Major, 13th Battn., A.I.F., Gallipoli, Egypt, France; also Indian Army. Enlisting 15th September, 1914, and sailing 22nd December as second-lieutenant, fought with battn. from the Anzac Landing till the Evacuation, in the Sinai Peninsula from 1st January to 20th May, 1916, and in France from 1st June, 1916, to 26th March, 1918, although wounded at Messines 10th August, 1917. Transferring to Indian Army, served with Burma to Kuki Punitive Force in 1918 and at Malabar Rebellion in 1921, returning in August, 1922. Promoted lieutenant, 1st February, 1915; captain, 21st January, 1916; major, 28th February, 1917. Awarded M.C. 1st January, 1917, and Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at Sydney Church of England Grammar School. Later at St. Paul's College.
