Book of Remembrance entry
M.C., E.D., M.B., Ch.M.; F.R.C.S. (Edin.), F.R.A.C.S. : Major, A.A.M.C., A.I.F., Egypt, England and France. Enlisting 2nd February, 1916, and sailing 24th April, served as M.O. troopship Port Macquarie and at No. 1 Australian Dermatological Hospital, Abbassia, till August. Was O.C. Dermatological Annexe, No. 3 Australian General Hospital till October at Abbassia and then at Brighton. Crossing to No. 2 A.G.H., Wimereux, in January, 1917, joined 12th Australian Field Ambulance in February, becoming R.M.O. 45th Battn. in March and returning to ambulance in February, 1918. Served as Acting D.A.D.M.S. 4th Division from March to June, and M.O. in charge 4th Army Rest Camp in July, with 12th A.F.Amb. from August to December and at Queen's Hospital, Sidcup, from January to March, 1919. Attended Edinburgh Royal College of Surgeons from April to July, and was O.C., A.A.M.C. Training Depot, Sutton Veny, till October and then at A.I.F. H.Q., London, till demobilisation. Awarded M.C.* at Messines and Mentioned in Despatches. A.M.F. : Lieutenant-Colonel, 4th Cavalry F.Amb. Early education at Sydney Preparatory and Grammar Schools. * He went forward under heavy artillery and machine-gun fire, and established his aid post in a shell hole, where he worked under most adverse conditions for five days without rest, attending the wounded of many units. He was under shell fire the whole time.
