M.C., B.Sc., B.E., A.M.I.E.Aust. : Captain, 4th Divisional Engineers and 1st Army Troops Coy., A.I.F., Gallipoli, France and England. Enlisting 17th February, 1915, and sailing 10th August with reinforcements, was with 1st Field Coy. as sapper until invalided to hospital 1st December. Assisted to form 13th Field Coy. at Tel-el- Kebir in March, 1916, and, crossing to France, served with it till September, 1917, when transferred to 12th, where mostly in charge owing to absence of O.C. Was wounded 12th June, 1917, at Blauen Molen, Messines, and in September at Zonnebeke. In August, 1918, was sent to Brightlingsea, appointed O.C. 1st Army Troops Coy. in December and joined Demobilisation Department in London, 26th January, 1919, serving until demobilisation. Promoted lieutenant, 5th March, 1916, and captain, 6th June. Awarded M.C.* and Mentioned in Despatches. Peter Nicol Russell Scholar. City Engineer, Wellington, N.Z. Early education at Scone Grammar School. * Whilst he was constructing a strong point our attacking infantry commenced to retire. He took charge of the situation at a critical moment, arranged for the destruction of two enemy guns, and did not leave the post until confidence was restored. The presence of this post was of great assistance to our left flank. He has always shown the greatest coolness under fire and has since been wounded whilst supervising a wiring party.
