Murphy delivered the presidential address at the seventh session of the Australasian Medical Congress in 1950 and the Bancroft oration in 1954. He was a director of several companies, including the Brisbane Gas Co. Ltd (1942-71). ADB entry

M.C., M.B., Ch.M., F.R.A.C.P. : Captain, A.A.M.C., A.I.F., England and France. Enlisting 13th March, 1917, and sailing 9th May with A.A.M.C. Reinforcements, served with Overseas Training Brigade, No. 2 Australian General Hospital, Wimereux, 1st Australian Field Ambulance, 12th Battn., 1st Divisional Engineers and until demobilisation, although wounded slightly at Chuignolles 24th August, 1918. Awarded M.C.* and Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at Brisbane Grammar School. Later at St. Andrew's College. * For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty near Peronne from 23rd to 26th August, 1918, as R.M.O. of a battalion. He placed his aid post in a railway cutting, where he dressed the wounded of his own and other units, under machine-gun and shell fire. When all our wounded had been cleared he went out and attended to the enemy in the open; while doing so, a shell burst in their midst, killing his orderly, a stretcher-bearer and several wounded, and wounding him. He continued his work for another 24 hours before reporting for relief.
