Book of Remembrance entry
D.S.O., M.C., M.B., Ch.M.; F.R.C.S. (Edin.) : Major, A.A.M.C., A.I.F., England and France. Enlisting 16th May, 1916, and sailing 6th August after service at Garrison Hospital, was M.O. Pioneer Training Battn., Perham Downs, till 31st December. Crossing to France, served at No. 1 Australian General Hospital, Rouen, till March, 1917, and then with 3rd Australian Field Ambulance, being R.M.O. n th Battn. from October, 1917, to January, 1919. Was Acting D.A.D.M.S. 1st Division till March, with No. 3 Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, till 30th May and on non-military employment until demobilisation. Awarded D.S.O.* 15th February, 1919, and M.C., 1st January, 1918, and Mentioned in Despatches. Renwick and John Harris Scholar. Early education at Dunolly Public and Sydney High Schools. Later one year in Arts. * During the attack near Villaret on 18th September, 1918, he displayed great gallantry and devotion to duty while attending to the wounded. In consequence of his excellent organisation for clearing the wounded he was able to keep in touch with the barrage . . . He showed great disregard of danger under heavy artillery and machine gun fire and by his skill saved many lives.
