Book of Remembrance entry
D.S.O., B.A., Law III : Captain, 18th Battn., Gallipoli and France; also A.N. and M.E.F., New Guinea. Enlisting 11th August, 1914, served at New Guinea, being promoted sergeant 13th October and returning 14th March, 1915. Re-enlisting 6th July and sailing as second-lieutenant 3rd Reinforcements, 20th Battalion, transferred to 18th on 29th September. Appointed 5th Brigade Grenade Officer 27th February, 1916, and posted to 5th Light Trench Mortar Battery 19th April, serving till wounded at Fleurbaix 25th June. Rejoining battn. 21st August, was again wounded at Ypres 29th September and returned to Australia 13th February, 1917. Re-embarking 4th August, again joined 18th Battn. 21st January, 1918, and fought till twice wounded near Framerville (east of Villers- Bretonneux) 9th August, returning to Australia 14th May, 1920. Promoted lieutenant, 7th January, 1916, and captain, 14th March. Awarded D.S.O.* and Mentioned in Despatches. * During an attack on 8th August, 1918, east of Villers-Bretonneux near Amiens, single-handed he attacked an enemy strong-point held by 17 enemy with a machine gun, killing three of the occupants and capturing the remainder. The following day, near Framerville, after being wounded, he continued to lead his company and, after gaining his objective, was again wounded, but refused to leave until the position had been made secure.
