Book of Remembrance entry
M.C. and Bar, M.B.; F.R.C.S. (Edin.) : Captain, R.A.M.C., B.E.F., and A.A.M.C., A.I.F., France and England. Sailing in March, 1915, reported at War Office, London, and, after appointment as lieutenant, joined 74th Field Ambulance 1st September but was with 71st Division at La Bassee, Ypres and Poperinghe. Returning to ambulance, was attached to 9th Sussex Regiment at Maple Copse trenches 1st March, 1916, and then at H.Q., Poperinghe, from 13th March to 3rd July, when promoted captain and ordered to 13th Stationary Hospital, Boulogne. Sent to 2nd Battn. Lancs. Fusiliers as M.O. 6th July and, following them through all engagements to Vimy Ridge and Arras 9th April, 1917, very reluctantly left them at Monchy just before the Great Advance when evacuated to Convalescent Hospital, Rouen. Upon recovery joined A.A.M.C. at No. 2 Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Southall, in September, crossing to No. 1 A.G.H., Rouen, in October, 1918, and serving until demobilisation after six months' non-military employment as House Physician, Royal Northern Hospital, London. Invested with M.C. by H.M. the King 2nd June, 1917, at Hyde Park and with Bar at Buckingham Palace. Mentioned in Despatches. On one occasion he organised party and dug out seven bearers buried by a shell during intense hostile bombardment. Early education at Sydney Church of England Grammar School. Later at St. Paul's College.
