Officer in the RAMC during the Boer War 1899-1901. He was Mentioned in Dispatches for his services and was awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal, with 6 clasps.
He joined the AAMC in 1904 and transferred to the Unattached List.
Hornabrook was appointed to the Melbourne General Hospital in 1909 and popularised the use of ethyl-chloride sequence in anaesthesia.
At age 43 he he was appointed as a surgeon in the Permanent naval Force. He resigned from this commission in 1914 and enlisted in the army in the AIF.
