M.C., B.E., Assoc.M.Inst.C.E., A.M.I.E.Aust. : Captain, 1st Australian Tunnelling Coy., A.I.F., France. Enlisting 30th May, 1915, and sailing 20th February, 1916, with Mining Corps (later 1st Tunnelling Coy.), having joined it on formation, served at Hill 60 and elsewhere until demobilisation. Promoted second-lieutenant, 1st December, 1915; lieutenant, 1st January, 1916; captain, 11th January, 1918. Awarded M.C. 30th May, 1918, and Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at East Maitland High School.
