Book of Remembrance entry
M.C., Secretary of The Union : Lieutenant, 5th Machine Gun Coy., A.I.F., France. Commissioned 6th January, 1916, and sailing n th March with 20th Battn. reinforcements, joined coy. 8th July, and fought at Pozieres and Flers. Promoted lieutenant and appointed Intelligence Officer, 5th Infantry Brigade, 29th December, joined 20th Battn. 25th January, 1917, and served during the following up of the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line and at Second Bullecourt, where he was Liaison Officer between 5th and 6th Brigades, and, with two officers, led a forlorn attack after the 5th had been repulsed. Rejoining unit 26th May, was at Menin Road, Broodeseinde and Passchendaele, where he took a prominent part in the attack on the railway cutting, continuing to advance after being wounded. Awarded M.C.* for "five instances of initiative, pluck and presence of mind "in May, 1917. Killed in Action, Passchendaele, 9th October, 1917. Commemorated in Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. Early education at Manor House School, Clapham, England. * "He took an active part in reorganizing the stragglers of three battalions, and displayed high courage in leading them forward."—London Gazette, 18th July, 1917.
