Betts became Patron of Port Adelaide Sailing Club, 1923-30, was President of local RSL Sub Branch. During World War II he was placed on the active reserve list AAMC 4MD.
Betts became a pioneer of orthopaedic surgery in Adelaide after returning from World War I. He worked at Estcourt House for many years with the disabled.
