M.C., Econ. : Lieutenant, 20th Battn., A.I.F., Gallipoli and France. Enlisting 21st June, 1915, and sailing 6th September, served at the Peninsula from 18th November till the Evacuation and then in Egypt till March. Crossing to France remained with battn. until the Armistice, except while in Cadet Battn., Trinity College, Cambridge, from January to April, 1917. Served at Fleurbaix, Pozieres, Ypres, Flers, Bullecourt, Passchendaele, Messines, Hangard Wood, Somme and elsewhere, though wounded at Bois Grenier near Armentieres in May, 1916. Promoted second-lieutenant, 1st May, 1917, and lieutenant, 10th October. Awarded M.C.* and Mentioned in Despatches. * During operations at Mont St. Quentin, near Peronne, on 31st August, 1918, he displayed great gallantry and remarkable resources in obtaining information, repeatedly crossing the river under the concentrated fire of many guns . . . —London Gazette, 1st February, 1919.
