M.C., Eng. : Lieutenant, 3rd Australian Tunnelling Coy., A.I.F., France. Enlisting 27th July, 1915, served for some months as quartermaster sergeant at depot owing to defective eyesight. Later entering an officers'' school and sailing in charge of reinforcements 19th July, 1916, was drafted to entrenching battn. on the Somme, being wounded in December at Flers and sent to No. 8 General Hospital, Rouen. Posted to coy. at Loos about March, 1917, with H.Q. at Noeux-les- Mines, carried out much underground work and was appointed to Special Investigation Squad, seeking delay-action devices (booby traps), co-operating with Canadians in capture of Hill 70. During German Retreat, was advancing along the Beloeil Road at the Armistice. Awarded M.C. 8th March, 1919, and Mentioned in Despatches. Special course in Mining. Early education at Wanganui College, N.Z. Later at Moore College.
